How To Reset Crankshaft Position Sensor No Start

The camshaft is responsible for converting linear energy and turning this into rotational energy for the car to move, so it’s a pretty important component in your car’s system, and the sensor plays a significant role as well. 

If you’re able to locate the car’s issue with this sensor, while you can reset it, some challenges come with it, where a synchronization error can occur, which means your vehicle may not even start.

To avoid this, you want to remove it correctly, which we discuss in more detail, but first, what is this sensor, and how does it work? 

What Is A Crankshaft Position Sensor? 

The sensor defines the position of the crankshaft drive and uses two sensors to alert the engine control unit when the first cylinder is at the top dead point, and this information is needed for a few reasons. 

The first one, the crankshaft sensor, is used to set ignition timing, detect engine RPM and relative engine speed, and negate the need for manual distribution timing. 

The second one, the camshaft sensor, works by starting injection during sequential injection for selective cylinder control and the actuation signal of the solenoid valve for the nozzle injection system.

This sensor scans a ring gear on the camshaft, and rotating the ring gear changes the voltage of the IC in the sensor head, so this change is transmitted to the control unit and analyzed here to get the required data. 

When Do I Know When To Reset It? 

For this, we’re going to focus primarily on the crankshaft sensor, and in general, you don’t need to worry about resetting it over the lifetime of the car.

Still, once your vehicle passes 100,000 miles, it becomes more likely you’ll need to check it at some point.

If you need to reset the sensor, it will usually involve you having to replace the unit, and a good sign of this is if you find a check engine light, you get issues with acceleration, or you experience stalling or sputtering while driving, which if left can cause irreversible damage to the engine.

There are two ways you can reset the sensor, and to identify the best way, you can find a car manual that matches your vehicle online or in print, so these methods involve using or not using the scanner, so work out which one you need to do before making any changes to the system.

If You Use The Scanner

Start by connecting the scanner to the car’s computer, and here you’re looking for no trouble codes left in the memory from the last sensor, so you can now use a unique code, which will be a diagnostic trouble code that starts with p1.

Now you can install the brake, close your hood, block the steering wheel, and start the car.

Once you select CASE, hold the pedal firmly and follow the instructions on the scanner until your motor goes into an idle state. 

If CASE has been learned, you have completed the sensor reallocation, and if not, you have to go back to the start and check if the powertrain code restricts the re-hierarchy, and if so, repeat the steps from when you installed the brake. 

If You Don’t Use The Scanner 

Start by turning off all the accessories in the car while keeping the air sensor and coolant level 5C apart and start the engine.

Keep the car in park mode for about 2 minutes, then accelerate your vehicle to 55 mph and maintain this for 10 minutes.

Once the car has reached its operating temperature, maintain this speed for another 50 seconds, reduce it to 27 mph, and hold it for a minute.

Hence, you must keep four deceleration cycles, each lasting around 25 seconds.

While doing this, you need to return to that 27mph in 15 seconds between those cycles, and here you won’t be allowed to brake. 

Now you can accelerate the car to 34mph and hold for another 2 minutes, and after this, keep your car idle for 2 minutes. While leaving the transmission in drive with the clutch pressed down.

What If I Still Have Issues With My Sensor? 

These methods can be a challenge for anyone who doesn’t have experience using a sensor, as it requires the correct inputs.

However, you install it, if you do it incorrectly or it leads to another overlying problem, this can lead to the car not starting at all.

While installing the sensor, something in the engine could be damaged or incorrectly installed, so if you’re unsure what this is, you have two options.

You can either consult with a car manual to troubleshoot the problem or take it to a mechanic who can diagnose the problem.

There are other problems that you may want to look out for during this process, especially if your car won’t start, and these are a faulty fuel injector, unstable fuel pump, or a damaged fuel filter. 

You can generally listen out for these issues as the engine can make sputtering sounds like a whining sound that you can locate at your gas tank. 

The Bottom Line 

Suppose you’re still struggling to diagnose the problem. In that case, it is still worth taking it to a mechanic as these issues can affect a car based on the model and make, as each can have a slightly different process, but keeping your vehicle in check can make installing the sensor much more manageable.

The last thing you need is to spend more money on parts other than the sensor, so make sure you need to replace it in the first place before proceeding with any significant work that may or may not be outside of your knowledge base.
